Entering the last Elite Skills Camp at Notre Dame last week, the buzz was around 2020 Carmel (Ind.) linebacker Ty Wise‍. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder didn’t disappoint as he made several plays using his speed and athleticism.

“I thought I did pretty well,” Wise told Irish Sports Daily. “I was pleased with my performance. I really liked the coaches and everyone up there. I had a good time.”

Wise had a chance to work with defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Clark Lea during the camp, and the Carmel standout was able to take a lot away during the two-hour camp.

“I noticed he knows what he’s doing,” stated Wise. “He’s a really smart coach and has the attitude that I have in we just want to win. I took a lot away from his coaching.

“He gave me some things I can improve on, but he also told me things I did well.”

Camps typically favor the offense, but Lea and his staff made sure the defense had a chance to win each rep.

“The kids were really good,” said Wise. “Coach Lea and his assistants were helping us through the drills and giving us an advantage.”

The trip was Wise’s first trip to South Bend, and he was impressed with what he saw despite it being a rainy day.

“I thought the campus was beautiful,” explained Wise. “They have a big and really nice facility. It rained a lot, but the football facilities were nice.”

Notre Dame was the last camp and visit of the summer for Wise, who had an aggressive visit schedule over the last few months.

“I camped at Northwestern, Notre Dame and Purdue,” Wise stated. “I did The Opening regional and the Best of the Midwest combine. I went on visits to Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, Northwestern, Ohio State and Purdue.”

Wise holds early offers from Indiana and Toledo, but he could be close to receiving a few more in the coming months.

“I had a good camp at Northwestern and Purdue,” Wise said. “I might be close to getting an offer from Louisville. It depends on how good of a season I have because I only started three games last season.

“Starting a whole season will be important for me. I should start to get some more offers if I can have a big season.”

An offer from Notre Dame would mean a lot to Wise, which might be a surprise to some.

“My parents both went to USC, so I grew up watching USC,” laughed Wise. “Living in Indiana, I watched Notre Dame a lot. My perception of Notre Dame has changed as I have learned more and I love the school.”

When decision time does come, Wise already knows what he will be looking for in a future school.

“I’m looking at scheme and how I would fit into the defense,” said Wise. “I’m looking at the academics and how I would fit into the school. I want to go to a school with a winning mentality. I don’t really like to lose, so I want to go to a school that contends for a National Championship every year.

“My number one thing will be my relationship with the coaching staff. I’m going to go to the school where I love the position coach because I’m going to be around him every day.”
