Khalid Kareem And Notre Dame Defensive Line Looking To Boost Sacks

Notre Dame defensive end Khalid Kareem isn’t a man of many words, but it was clear the focus of this week is for the defensive line to do their job against No. 7 Stanford.

“We’re just trying to keep the focus on doing our job and doing what we have to do,” stated Kareem.

The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder has done his job through four games as Kareem has racked up 15 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks despite battling through an ankle injury.

Saturday presents the challenge of not only stopping a Heisman candidate but a unique passing game. However, it starts with stopping Bryce Love, who has rushed for 254 yards and four scores this year.

“Everyone has to do their job,” explained Kareem. “We have to be on point every play. He’s an electrifying player.

“You always have to watch the film, but he’s a guy you have to pay a little more attention too. His cutting ability - he tries to cut it inside, but then breaks it outside.”

When it comes to the other piece of the puzzle, Stanford quarterback KJ Costello torched the Irish a year ago by throwing for 176 yards and four touchdowns.

“He’s pretty solid,” Kareem said. “The defensive line will do a good job of getting after him. He’s not much of a runner, and he’ll stay in the pocket to make some tough throws. We have to pressure him.”

Stanford’s offensive line has given up just five sacks on the year, and it’s something Kareem hopes to change on Saturday.

“I’m aware,” laughed Kareem. “But I feel like this defensive line will definitely change that. We have to be stout up front. We have to be physical with their offensive line. They’re known for being physical, so we have to match that physicality and do our job.”

The chance to host a Top 8 game at home isn’t lost on Kareem, but he also wants to end the three-game losing streak to get the Legends Trophy back in South Bend.

“This is a big-time game,” stated Kareem. “We haven’t won since 2014, and we’re trying to get that trophy back. The last time we won, I was here for one of my recruiting visits. It was an exciting game to be at. Having the game at home, it’s one we want to get.

“I think the crowd will definitely play a factor. We need everyone to come. Be there, be loud and support the boys.”
