It’s been a busy month for Mordecai McDaniel‍.

Prior to landing scholarship offers to play football at Notre Dame and Alabama, the 2020 athlete from St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., traveled to Iceland for the Reykjavik International Games, where he competed in the 400 and relay track events as a member of the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation team.

The 6-foot-3, 187-pound junior registered a sub-50 time in the 400 and anchored the winning 4x200 relay squad.

St. John’s College High School head coach Joe Casamento was matter-of-fact when asked about McDaniel’s talents on the football field.

“He’s long and he’s fast,” the coach said. “Everybody is looking at him either as a DB or a receiver.”

Off the field, McDaniel also checks the boxes, according to his coach.

“He’s great,” the coach said. “He’s a good student, he’s a good kid. He’s obviously a superior athlete.

“He’s good. He’s a solid kid. He’s a really good kid.”

Casamento said he couldn’t speculate on where McDaniel is in the recruiting process.

“Day after day, we just try to get better,” he said.

McDaniel will certainly have plenty of options. In addition to the Irish and the Crimson Tide, he also has offers from schools like LSU, Arizona, Maryland, Boston College, Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nebraska, Tennessee and Ole Miss among others.
