After more than 20 scholarships, Eric McDaniels‍ is probably used to landing offers, but some still make a major impact.

“Certain schools, it’s still a shock,” the 2021 Virginia running back/linebacker says.

Notre Dame hasn’t offered McDaniels yet, but that’s one program that would surely get his attention.

“If they were to offer me they will definitely be in my top five,” he says.

The 6-foot, 225-pound sophomore has had some contact with the Irish.

“They send me camp invites, days they want me to come visit,” he says. “We keep in touch quite a bit.”

McDaniels is hoping to get to South Bend this summer.

“I would love to get there,” he says. “I know it’s an educational school first. I know their football program is a top program in the nation. I watched them growing up a little bit. I know they have some of the highest NFL Draft prospects. They will get you in The League and that’s my dream.”

The Henrico High School standout says he’d like to see what the environment is like at Notre Dame and how the people within the school and program support each other.

Notre Dame is recruiting him to play offense.

“I prefer running back because that’s more of my style, but hey, wherever Coach puts me, I’ll play,” he says.

Scouts like what McDaniels, who has been clocked at 4.5, brings to the field and the locker room.

“First of all, the way I run the ball, team leadership, stuff like that,” he says. “Being a team captain at a young age and leading the team.”

McDaniels’ offer sheet includes Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Michigan, Florida and Duke among many others.

He’s already visited a few schools.

“I’ve been to UNC, South Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech,” he says. “I’ve got a visit to Clemson coming up on the 28th and then NC State coming up.”

McDaniels is planning to continue hitting the road in the months to come.

Going to a college that will have his back will be very important to his ultimate decision.

“Who is really behind me? Not just as far as the coaching staff, but the school. Who is really going to support me and help me succeed in life?”
