Notre Dame had seen Jakobe Coles plenty of times before deciding to offer the 2020 Texas power forward last week.

“They’ve come a couple times in the past couple years,” Guyer High School head coach Grant Long says. “We’ve had some other high-level players come through here, so they’ve looked all of them. They saw him as a young kid and have seen him mature. I think they saw him in Atlanta (last) weekend and saw the skillset and what he can do.”

Coles also has offers from Colorado, TCU, SMU, Tulsa and North Texas.

“He’s a great kid, good student in class, great social kid,” Long says. “All of the kids around here love him. He’s very skilled, can shoot the ball, play inside and out. He handles the ball for us sometimes as a big man at about 6-9, 230, 235. He can handle the ball pretty good. He’s very skilled for his size. He’s a good player to have on the floor for sure because he can do multiple things.”

Long says he believes Coles is “definitely interested” in the Irish offer.

“It’s a big offer from a big program,” the coach continues. “I definitely think he was very excited about it.”

His father and older brother played college basketball.

“They’re a basketball family,” says Long. “I’m sure he would love the tradition of Notre Dame as well.”

Coles has yet to take any official visits yet, but Notre Dame looks like a potential fit on and off the court.

“Definitely a good education,” Long says of what will be important when Coles is picking a school. “That piece will be big for his parents. He’s got a good Mom and Dad, good family life.

“I think he fits in great with the kind of 4s that (the Irish) have there.”
