2021 OL Mason Bundy Enjoys First Trip To Notre Dame
2021 Fannin County (Ga.) offensive lineman Mason Bundy made his first trip to Notre Dame last weekend for the Lineman’s Challenge, which also included his first flight.
The 6-foot-6, 270-pounder made it South Bend in one piece but was a little tired as he attended a camp at Auburn the day before. However, it didn’t impact his excitement once he arrived on campus.
“I loved it,” Bundy told Irish Sports Daily. “I loved everything about it. I felt the camp went well. It probably could have gone better on my behalf with it being my first time flying and I was running on two hours of sleep. We didn’t get to the hotel in Chicago until 2 a.m. and then it was a two-hour drive plus Notre Dame was an hour ahead.”
Bundy felt he maximized each rep and took away something from each win and loss.
“I did pretty well overall,” stated Bundy. “I lost a few reps, but I won most of them. I was pretty happy with it.”
The Georgia native has attended several camps in the South over the last few weeks and got to work at guard for the first time at Notre Dame.
“There were a bunch of tackles there, so I got a lot of my reps in at guard,” said Bundy. “It didn’t feel unnatural, but I definitely prefer tackle. I can play guard too.”
While there weren’t any significant differences between Notre Dame and the other camps he attended, Bundy did feel a little more intensity in South Bend as some of the top offensive linemen in the country were in attendance.
“That was a difference and it was pretty cool,” explained Bundy. “Everyone was there for the same goal and purpose. We all wanted an offer and to get evaluated. I enjoyed it and enjoyed the competition.
“It felt the same as other camps, but Notre Dame is a big school and it was definitely a national camp. The other camps I’ve been to have had kids from the state or maybe a state over. Notre Dame had people from New Jersey, California, Texas, Florida and Georgia there.”
In addition to getting quality work, Bundy had the chance to get coached up by Notre Dame offensive line coach Jeff Quinn.
“I love him,” Bundy stated. “I loved the intensity and everything about him. I think he’s a good guy and a really good coach.”
Another small difference at Notre Dame’s camp was the involvement of members of the current team. Most of the offensive line was out in the rain coaching up all the campers and left tackle Liam Eichenberg was with Bundy’s group.
“He was in control of my group for the most part,” recalled Bundy. “He was there and helping us out. He was very active with the group. He was hands-on and did a lot of coaching. He was a really good guy and I liked him.”
Notre Dame’s campus also left a lasting impression on Bundy.
“It’s a different campus from a lot of the college I’ve been,” said Bundy. “Other colleges have more of a modern feel, but I loved Notre Dame’s originality and the feel of campus. It feels prestigious.”
