Jay Brunelle‍ is used to being doubted and that’s fine with him.

Entering the recruiting process, the 2020 Massachusetts wide receiver knew he’d have to overcome obstacles to get the kind of scholarship offers he wanted.

So, he did.

But even as major offers came in from schools like Michigan and UCLA, there was one he’d always wanted, Notre Dame.

He worked and he got it and on Tuesday night, the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder acted on it, giving his verbal commitment to the Irish.

“Notre Dame has a special place in my heart and I really love it,” Brunelle told Irish Sports Daily when he received the offer.

The pledge gives Notre Dame 15 members of the Class of 2020 and a pair of receivers as he joins Jordan Johnson.

Brunelle initially visited South Bend for a Junior Day back in February. The coaches were honest with him from the start, explaining their interest while also saying he’d have a chance to earn an offer at Irish Invasion in June. It was the kind of opportunity Brunelle always craved.

As the months went by, Brunelle continued to climb up the national radar with eye-opening performances on the camp circuit.

When he arrived back in South Bend for Irish Invasion, he delivered the kind of performance that immediately caught the staff’s attention and he had a scholarship offer by the time he left town.

Michigan had been seriously lurking the entire time, though. New Wolverines offensive coordinator Josh Gattis made Brunelle a real priority and an official visit to Ann Arbor this past weekend put Michigan in a position to be at the top of the list.

But a conversation with Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chip Long on Tuesday night put the Irish back on top and Brunelle decided it was the school he’d always wanted to be at and that there was no longer any reason to wait.

“I really like the way Coach Del Alexander coaches. I think being able to work with him could really advance my game forward as you’ve seen with the receivers they have now like Chris Finke and (Chase) Claypool.”
