No. 8 Notre Dame at No. 19 Michigan

Michigan Stadium |7:30 p.m. ET | ABC

Game Week Articles | Roster| Depth ChartSchedule |Staff Predictions

The Elements

Michigan Stadium hasn’t been kind to Notre Dame for quite some time. The crowd will make it tough on the Irish, but it’s going to be a night filled with rain.

Saturday night will fall on the shoulders of Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chip Long. Can he find a way to run the ball against Don Brown? Can he find a way to get Chase Claypool the ball? There is no excuse for Chase Claypool not to be having a big season and he’s not. Saturday will be a chance to turn the tide.

Defensively, Notre Dame’s pass rush will be key and it’s a safe bet Michigan native Khalid Kareem will want to make a statement in The Big House.

Five Players To Watch

Notre Dame TE Cole Kmet
His matchup versus Khaleke Hudson might be the best one of the night. Notre Dame will need him to win against tight man coverage.

Michigan LB Cameron McGrone
McGrone has only started four games, but he's made an impact in every one of them. He's been disruptive as a blitzer with 3.5 sacks.

Notre Dame RB Tony Jones
Jones is coming off of three consecutive 100-yard games, one of which came against a Virginia defense that still ranks as one of the best at stopping the run. If he can make it four in a row, it should equal to a win.

Michigan WR Ronnie Bell
Will he respond positively after a drop in the end zone against Penn State last week? We'll see soon enough. He's an explosive playmaker for the Michigan offense that will need to be contained.

Notre Dame CB Shaun Crawford
Back from injury, he'll have a size disadvantage against Michigan's taller receivers. This is his first game against the program he was once committed to.

By The Numbers

3 - Brian Kelly is the first Irish coach to post three or more shutouts in his Notre Dame career since Lou Holtz.

4 - Brady Quinn, Tommy Rees, Jimmy Clausen, Ron Powlus and Ian Book are the only quarterbacks in Notre Dame history to record four or more touchdown passes in three games in their career.

21 - TE Cole Kmet has totaled 21 receptions over the last four games, which tied for the most among FBS tight ends during that timespan. Kmet missed the first two games of the season with a collarbone injury.

22 - Notre Dame remains perfect in redzone-scoring percentage, converting on 22-of-22 visits inside the 20. Nineteen of those scores were touchdowns (11 rushing, eight passing). Just two other teams boast perfection in the redzone (Iowa and LSU), and, of those teams, only LSU (31) has totaled more redzone touchdowns than the Irish.

25.8 - Notre Dame’s defense led the FBS after Week 7 in opponent passing completions per touchdown, holding squads to 25.8 completions per touchdown.

30 - Notre Dame has held its opponents to 30 points or less in 20 consecutive games, the longest streak in FBS

Quotes of the Week

QB Ian Book:
“We like when it’s loud. We like when there is a lot of people there. We like when it’s primetime television. That’s why we come to Notre Dame.”

DE Khalid Kareem:
"I kind of view them as a faceless opponent. Another team in the way of us getting to the National Championship. I feel it's a little personal for me. I'm 30 minutes away from Ann Arbor. I know a lot of guys on the team and I have a lot of friends who go to Michigan. It'll be good to go in there and try to get the dub."

Former LB Jarrett Grace:
“As a Midwest kid, you had bumped shoulders with these guys for years during your recruitment and would almost label the other side as bad guys who lacked the intelligence and common decency it would take to succeed at Notre Dame."

This. I won't lose sleep. These are college kids, they have more important **** too, IE: education. I'll always root for all of them with whatever they do. Coaches should be ashamed of themselves, though. They got paid for this *****

This just might be the dose of reality this program needs

WE have always known this coach ain't getting it done
But maybe; just maybe this opens the eyes of some decision makers

Maybe we look back at this as a turning point...

Trying to stay positive here

As long as the program keeps making money they won't change. The administration is not concerned with winning, they just want to be an Ivy League school with a money making football program. It's been this way for 25 years and I don't think they are going to change.
There aren't too many programs out there that would fire a coach with Kelly's record. They went 12-0 just last year remember.

I'm not talking about Kelly. I'm talking about the necessary changes to; admissions, academic load and other changes to make winning a priority... Like it used to be before they made all the idiotic changes
Got it. I'd like to see some changes as well, but I've been waiting for that for many years now, so not very hopeful.
oh yea, I have no illusions that ND is going to go back to what it used to be. Its coffers are overflowing with endowment money now. People who think winning an NC has any importance to the powers that be are fooling themselves.

Sucks for those of us who became fans long before ND changed. You just can't turn it off

Well, one thing is clear. Those people who complained about Kelly ruining quarterbacks had no idea what they were talking about.

Kelly has taken us as far as he is able.
Kelly just does not devote the effort through his staff and into his players to develop their performance onto a higher plain. He **** the bed with the hire of Quinn, opportunity lost.

All I know is, if the ND team that played against Georgia showes up to this game, ND mops Michigan up. Idk who the H.S. team that played against michigan was tonight, I'm mystified..

UM is running it down our throat in the rain and we run sideways for 1 yard per carry. Has nothing to do with the QB on either team. We are soft and they are better coached.

Special teams gets an F .....Kelly's road woes contine....same ole song and dance.
They are better coached?

That's just dumb
Really? Tonight they are...take a poll right now and see how fans there are of the game plan with two weeks to prepare and the DB coaching where even the safety doesn't look for the ball and gets critical PI call.

Harbaugh did make it to three straight NFC championship games and Don Brown is very good coach. Kelly does a good job beating the average teams, but is a pretender when playing ranked teams.
Clearly Gilman has been coached to interfere.

Yes he has.....our guys have been coached to play the receivers eyes and hand fight instead of turning for the ball. That is why we get PI called all the time and suck at corner. Defend the coaches all you want...you will be the band leader in Animal House getting run over by everyone who actually knows the game

Ok, what bothers me is that this team just fcking QUIT. And that's a big, big problem. SC quits. ScUM quits. ND doesn't fcking quit but this team did tonight and I just cannot wrap my head around that.
UM quits?? Did you see the end of the Penn State game? USC didn't quit against us...they almost came back and won

Sometime, hopefully in the not too distant future, there will be a coach with ethical standards, with elite skills, who chooses to come to ND. Ara in 1963, it can happen again.

It's really impossible to find an excuse for this game. Two weeks to prepare, key rival, everyone knew the weather going on, playoff implications. I'm just dumbfounded by the team's performance. Didn't expect this in a million years, I thought we had gotten past this in the Kelly era. I was wrong.
