No. 8 Notre Dame at No. 19 Michigan

Michigan Stadium |7:30 p.m. ET | ABC

Game Week Articles | Roster| Depth ChartSchedule |Staff Predictions

The Elements

Michigan Stadium hasn’t been kind to Notre Dame for quite some time. The crowd will make it tough on the Irish, but it’s going to be a night filled with rain.

Saturday night will fall on the shoulders of Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chip Long. Can he find a way to run the ball against Don Brown? Can he find a way to get Chase Claypool the ball? There is no excuse for Chase Claypool not to be having a big season and he’s not. Saturday will be a chance to turn the tide.

Defensively, Notre Dame’s pass rush will be key and it’s a safe bet Michigan native Khalid Kareem will want to make a statement in The Big House.

Five Players To Watch

Notre Dame TE Cole Kmet
His matchup versus Khaleke Hudson might be the best one of the night. Notre Dame will need him to win against tight man coverage.

Michigan LB Cameron McGrone
McGrone has only started four games, but he's made an impact in every one of them. He's been disruptive as a blitzer with 3.5 sacks.

Notre Dame RB Tony Jones
Jones is coming off of three consecutive 100-yard games, one of which came against a Virginia defense that still ranks as one of the best at stopping the run. If he can make it four in a row, it should equal to a win.

Michigan WR Ronnie Bell
Will he respond positively after a drop in the end zone against Penn State last week? We'll see soon enough. He's an explosive playmaker for the Michigan offense that will need to be contained.

Notre Dame CB Shaun Crawford
Back from injury, he'll have a size disadvantage against Michigan's taller receivers. This is his first game against the program he was once committed to.

By The Numbers

3 - Brian Kelly is the first Irish coach to post three or more shutouts in his Notre Dame career since Lou Holtz.

4 - Brady Quinn, Tommy Rees, Jimmy Clausen, Ron Powlus and Ian Book are the only quarterbacks in Notre Dame history to record four or more touchdown passes in three games in their career.

21 - TE Cole Kmet has totaled 21 receptions over the last four games, which tied for the most among FBS tight ends during that timespan. Kmet missed the first two games of the season with a collarbone injury.

22 - Notre Dame remains perfect in redzone-scoring percentage, converting on 22-of-22 visits inside the 20. Nineteen of those scores were touchdowns (11 rushing, eight passing). Just two other teams boast perfection in the redzone (Iowa and LSU), and, of those teams, only LSU (31) has totaled more redzone touchdowns than the Irish.

25.8 - Notre Dame’s defense led the FBS after Week 7 in opponent passing completions per touchdown, holding squads to 25.8 completions per touchdown.

30 - Notre Dame has held its opponents to 30 points or less in 20 consecutive games, the longest streak in FBS

Quotes of the Week

QB Ian Book:
“We like when it’s loud. We like when there is a lot of people there. We like when it’s primetime television. That’s why we come to Notre Dame.”

DE Khalid Kareem:
"I kind of view them as a faceless opponent. Another team in the way of us getting to the National Championship. I feel it's a little personal for me. I'm 30 minutes away from Ann Arbor. I know a lot of guys on the team and I have a lot of friends who go to Michigan. It'll be good to go in there and try to get the dub."

Former LB Jarrett Grace:
“As a Midwest kid, you had bumped shoulders with these guys for years during your recruitment and would almost label the other side as bad guys who lacked the intelligence and common decency it would take to succeed at Notre Dame."

At this point there is not one captain with a possibility to return I want back.

As a matter of fact, no fifth years thank you. If we are going to play like this give the PT to younger guys and let them develop. We know what the older guys can do. Time to move them on. And maybe we can add to the 2020 class.

UM is running it down our throat in the rain and we run sideways for 1 yard per carry. Has nothing to do with the QB on either team. We are soft and they are better coached.

Special teams gets an F .....Kelly's road woes contine....same ole song and dance.
They are better coached?

That's just dumb
Really? Tonight they are...take a poll right now and see how fans there are of the game plan with two weeks to prepare and the DB coaching where even the safety doesn't look for the ball and gets critical PI call.

Harbaugh did make it to three straight NFC championship games and Don Brown is very good coach. Kelly does a good job beating the average teams, but is a pretender when playing ranked teams.
Clearly Gilman has been coached to interfere.

Really pisses me off that we're at this point wrt Book and Long. It's too fcking late. Book should have been benched for Phil weeks ago. Now it's too fcking late. What a fcking joke.
Well, then this would have been Phil's good year and we'd be all excited for next year. Then we would see the same regression we always see with ND QBs. One of the great mysteries. Even with bad coaching, you would think a QB would get a bit better with experience. I don't recognize this version of Book. He was so much better last year.

Any chance of a QB switch at halftime?

His confidence is shot. He's so quick to tuck the ball and run. Something needs to be done to force him to stay in the pocket or get the hook.

Based on BKs comments I think it's possible and he surprises us.

Yeah, but why does it keep happening to our QBs?

Tell Lea, if they get a 1st down on the next possession, he'll be regretting life.... then kick on on sides kick.

I agree Socal,ND coaches are getting embarrassed tonight.ND coaching is soft as the players. Oh well,ND coaches can only make adjustments at halftime. It seems they don't have the capability to do it on the fly.If I was BK my adjustments would be take over the playcalling in the second half and give the ball to Phil and see if he can bring some life to this offense.

One only has to look at the captains to see why this season, barring a major turnaround, will be a failure.

- Book: Has looked shaken all year and doesn't make the big throws.
- Finke: Went from a worthy and rock solid receiver to mediocre at best and unreliable.
- Hainsey: He's been alright.
- Elliott: Non-existent in these big games.
- Gilman: Sloppy and undisciplined.
- Okwara: Soft and playing half-assed.

That is some piss poor displays of leadership.

There's always Clark. Lol.

Wrt Book, imo, it was clear several weeks ago that he is not the answer and that our offense needed the dimensions Phil brings to make it effective. If Phil would have been worked into the first team offense back then, we'd be set now. Unfortunately he wasn't and so we are screwed.

This is so painful. Losing like this to fing Michigan and Boogers Harbaugh is the ultimate embarrassment.
Guess it was too much to ask for the team to be up for this game having just played our biggest rival.

Couldn't agree more. We have made a ton of mistakes in that first half. Lots of players need to pick up their game.

Book is just not a elite QB, he's not even a good one. He cannot see the field, partially because of his height but also because he doesn't go through progression's, he panics to much. Nobody is the Country outside of Book's family would be criticizing Kelly for benching Book in the second half and going with Phil. 50 pathetic yards and zero freaking points is pathetic. Bench Book and tell Chip to hit the showers too.

ISD Staff - please ask Kelly after the game if he is going to consider a QB change for next week.

Will it make sense to come out with Book in the 2nd half? Running the same stuff? I mean, something has to change. Right??
