The recruiting process has started early for Brenan Vernon‍ and the 2023 Ohio defensive lineman was in South Bend on Saturday for Notre Dame’s game against Navy.

“It went great,” the 6-foot-5, 245-pounder said. “I loved it.

“Just the atmosphere in general. Before we signed in and everything, we took a walk around the campus. Walking through the church and stuff like that, I realized how close the college is to God. That meant a lot to me. The atmosphere in general was amazing, the stadium, coaches, everything.”

While on campus, the Mentor High School star had a chance to speak with Irish defensive line coach Mike Elston.

“He just talked to me, introduced himself to me,” Vernon explained. “He said he likes what he saw on film. He told me that I’ve just got to keep working and that I’m going to be one of the first people he comes down and visits.”

Vernon, who already has offers from Duke and Indiana, said that felt “pretty good” to hear.

“It gave me butterflies knowing that I really do have this potential, it’s just how bad I want it,” he continued.

“He’s such a good guy. He came up to me with a smile on his face, he brought it in with a bro hug. I just felt so welcomed from the first handshake.”

Vernon plans on being back in South Bend throughout the process.

“I really loved everything there, so that’s for sure a school I want to keep coming back to visit,” he said.

“Besides football, academics. I want to see what Notre Dame has to offer academically. In general, I want to get to know the coaches a lot more and build relationships to see how I feel.”

As of now, Vernon doesn’t have any other visits planned.
