Notre Dame TE Commit Cane Berrong Talks McNulty & More
Cane Berrong was looking forward to meeting new Notre Dame tight ends coach John McNulty when the 2021 Irish tight end commit visited South Bend this month, but COVID-19 concerns led the NCAA to shut down all in-person recruiting.
Berrong was scheduled to be on campus for the program’s major recruiting event on March 21st.
“It was going to be a big one,” says Berrong.
While it will be sometime before Berrong gets to meet McNulty in person, it didn’t take long for the Irish’s new assistant to reach out.
“He called me like 10 minutes after it got announced,” Berrong says. “We talked and he said he was excited about my film and that he couldn’t wait until I get down there.”
The two have remained in touch since and will continue to stay in contact moving forward.
Berrong said he was “relieved” by the hire of McNulty, who replaced former Irish offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Chip Long.
“There was a good period where we didn’t have one,” he says. “Now that I know who it is, I get to build a relationship with him. I talked to the tight ends who are there now and they love him. He’s a great guy, so I’m just looking forward to building a relationship.”
With school cancelled and restrictions in place, Berrong is doing his best to deal with change.
“I’m not going to be able to go to school and stuff like that, so it’s different,” he says. “Nothing like this has ever happened before, but my goal is to get to work, hit the weight room hard and try to come back stronger than anybody.”
Berrong has been working out at 180 Sports Performance, doing an hour of speed work and an hour of lifting each visit.
“I’m there more often than I am regularly,” he says. “I feel like I’m going to come back stronger.”
Notre Dame was the only visit Berrong had planned and expects to return to South Bend when he can.
