Coach | 2023 Notre Dame DL Target Avion Carter Hungry & Humble
All of the attention and scholarship offers that have come to Avion Carter are no surprise to Derek Galt.
“As a player, super talented, very explosive, big kid,” the assistant head football coach at Tascosa High School says of the 2023 defensive lineman. “He's got a really good frame and he's going to put on some weight as well when he gets to college.
“I'm not exactly sure what position he's going to end up playing at that level. I kind of think that that's up for some debate.”
The 6-foot-6, 255-pounder plays defensive end for Tascosa.
“But the possibility of playing defensive line, defensive tackle, possibly even on the offensive side,” says Galt. “I don't even know. He's a really good athlete, runs well for his size. He's getting really strong.
“He probably will play some defensive tackle for us in the fall. But depending on where he projects at the next level, we may start to move him around a little bit. He can easily play tight end for us as well right now, he's that athletic. He catches the ball well and blocks. He's very versatile.”
Galt notes how young Carter is as well, “He's not even driving yet. He's got a pretty high ceiling.”
Notre Dame extended an offer to Carter back in March and at the time, Galt called it the “most significant one” at least in the coach’s opinion.
“He's just hungry,” Galt continued. “I keep saying the same thing, but he's absolutely handling this the right way. He doesn't feel like he's reached the top of the mountain here because like I said, his ceiling is really unlimited. He's going to get better and bigger.”
Last month, he added LSU to an offer sheet that already included Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma among many others.
“As a kid, he's a really good kid, extremely humble,” Galt said. “He's really been kind of taken aback by all this attention and stuff. He's handling it the right way. He's really, really hungry. He wants to be a success and wants to be good. More importantly, he wants our team and he wants to win championships. He's a solid kid. He's going to be a really good player at the next level.”
That team-first mentality and maturity is huge for the program, according to Galt.
“It's big time,” he said. “He's a great role model, not only for some of these younger kids because he's still on the younger end of all this, but he's a good role model for our older kids. Like I said, he does a good job of being humble through all this stuff.
“Avion handles it really well. He goes about his business the right way. He's super hungry in the weight room. He's a good example. It kind of keeps our program in the forefront. Our Twitter's blowing up right now, so it's kind of cool.”
