Notre Dame and Tommy Rees have refused to recruit the quarterback position like the wild west. The Irish don’t toss out 10, 12 or 20 offers a year to quarterbacks, so when an offer goes out, it definitely catches the attention of many.

Rees offered 2024 Carlsbad (Calif.) quarterback Julian Sayin‍ on June 4th and it turned some heads as the Irish don’t typically offer a signal-caller this early the process.

"It was definitely a special offer because they aren't just handing out offers,” Sayin told ISD. “They're really evaluating the athlete. It's a historic program based on tradition."

Notre Dame wasn’t the first offer for Sayin, but receiving the offer was a memorable one as the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder was actually on a visit at another school when Rees offered.

"I was actually in Tallahassee at the time visiting Florida State,” explained Sayin. “I was about to go to dinner and got on FaceTime with Coach Rees. We had a good conversation and he offered."

The California native wasted little time getting out to South Bend as he made a visit later in the month. Sayin was able to get a feel for campus, Rees and the quarterback room, which made quite the impression.

"When I visited out there, we went to lunch with Coach Rees and Tyler Buchner,” said Sayin. “He seems like a very cool coach. I really liked it and how it's based on tradition. It's a special place. You can tell the people really care about the program."

Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Texas also hosted the Carlsbad star this summer and Sayin felt he accomplished his goal of building relationships with the coaches recruiting him.

"I was building relationships with the coaches because you know how quickly things can change in the coaching world,” stated Sayin. “I also wanted to feel out those places and get a vibe to see what it's like at those schools."

It’s a mature outlook to the process as Sayin heads into his sophomore season, but he realizes by the time he enrolls in college, the coaching staffs will look pretty different in 2024.

"It's definitely a little weird, which why I was trying to build relationships,” Sayin said. “If I do like this one spot and one of the coaches I liked moved there, then I know it'd be a great fit."

Sayin’s maturity shouldn't come as a surprise as he earned his first offer in middle school as Frank Diaz from FAU offered. It expedited his maturity, but Sayin also admits it’s a surreal feeling to know he has offers from some of the top programs in the country before his sophomore year.

"I was definitely surprised,” Sayin said about the offer from FAU. “It came in March of eighth grade when Florida Atlantic offered. I was actually going to a workout at the time, so it was a big surprise.

"It's special and it's honestly kind of surreal."

It doesn’t take long to see why schools like Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas and Texas A&M have jump early on Sayin. The film shows a calm, cool and collected prospect who can push the ball down the field.

"I feel like the ability to make plays on the fly and also be the quarterback that the team needs in the pocket,” Sayin stated. “I can make the throws you need to make, but I can make throws off schedule.

"I feel I've become a better runner this offseason with my speed coach. I've become a better athlete."

As for a commitment, Sayin has thought about a timeline and a decision could come as soon as next summer as he understands the importance of being able to help build a class.

"I'm kind of thinking maybe next summer, the summer before my junior year or sometime during my junior year,” said Sayin.

Offers: Arizona, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Penn State, San Jose State, Texas, Texas A&M, Utah State and Washington State
