Notre Dame QB Commit Steve Angeli Recaps South Bend Return
Steve Angeli made one trip to Notre Dame before committing to the Irish and the 2023 New Jersey quarterback returned this summer for an official visit.
But this weekend’s trip to South Bend was different.
“It was awesome,” the Bergen Catholic High School star told Irish Sports Daily afterward. “It was awesome. It was a really good time.
“Being out there to finally experience a gameday atmosphere was really special. I've been on campus back in December and then in June for my official, but to see campus packed and the South Bend area be so crowded with people coming in from all around the country to watch Notre Dame play was really special. Finally being able to experience a gameday and that being my first gameday ever, it was an exciting experience.”
Angeli visited with Bergen Catholic teammates Sydir Mitchell Jr. and Jayden Bellamy, who is also an Irish commit.
The atmosphere inside Notre Dame Stadium for the Toledo game stuck out.
“It was awesome,” Angeli said. “We were right by the student section, just seeing how crazy they were going for all the players, all the alumni coming back and supporting the team and just seeing their crowd erupt every time a big play happened was really special.”
While the margin of victory wasn’t what was expected, Angeli was still impressed with the Irish offense, specifically the quarterbacks.
“I think Jack (Coan) and Tyler (Buchner) played really well,” he said. “I think they both contributed really well to the team win and I think the offense played really well in the passing game. Obviously, when it came down to the clutch, they delivered to get the go-ahead touchdown. I think the offense played pretty well. I think Jack had a really great game throwing the ball and Tyler made some explosive runs and plays.
“I think Coach Rees called such a great game in my opinion being able to set Tyler up for success and then set Jack up for success when he was in and being able to manage them both was really cool to see.”
Afterward, Angeli had a chance to speak with some of his future teammates.
“It was a good time,” he said. “They already treat me like family and I can't wait to get out there.”
Angeli and Bellamy spent the weekend showcasing Notre Dame to Mitchell, a talented defensive tackle in the Class of 2023.
“Trying to show him why we made the decision and just being able to experience that with my teammates and also the other guys who are committed in my class, it was a great time to be around them and watch football with them and just talk football and analyze while we were watching the game.”
