BREAKING | 2023 Four-Star DL Devan Houstan Commits to Notre Dame

Notre Dame entered Saturday afternoon with the No. 1 class in the country and the Fighting Irish will hold firm in the top spot as 2023 Saint James School (Md.) defensive lineman Devan Houstan‍ has given his pledge to Marcus Freeman. 

The four-star prospect chose Notre Dame over Michigan, Northwestern, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers and Wake Forest. 

Freeman’s presence as the head coach made a lasting impression on Houstan during his January visit, but the 6-foot-5, 270-pounder also got a taste of how the team viewed their new head coach in December. 

"The video that came out when he got announced as head coach with the players freaking out - it just goes to show how much of a people person he is,” Houstan said in April. “He runs the program as a family versus being a CEO and the team is his company. He runs it like he's the head of the family and that's great to see."  

Houstan might not be a senior yet, but he handled his process like a veteran as he watched his older brother, Caleb, go through a high-profile recruitment in hoops.

"They all have similar things to offer," Houstan said of his process. "There are things that vary in terms of education, but in general, being able to get out to a lot of schools is a blessing. I'm able to compare and contrast what I see and it's helped open my eyes into what I care about, like the campus size, how many students go to school there or how long it will take for me to get to practice and how close is my dorm to the academic buildings.

"All that stuff starts to run through my mind and I start to compare all the schools I've been to.” 

Notre Dame is now officially in the running for the top defensive line class in the country as Houstan joins Keon Keeley‍, Boubacar Traore‍ and Brenan Vernon‍ in the 2023 recruiting haul for the Irish.
