There aren’t many players from the Midwest with potential to be true number one receivers, which is why it’s so important for Notre Dame to be in the mix for them when there is one. Not only are the Irish in the mix for one, they just landed an early commitment from Cam Williams‍, who has all the traits necessary to develop into one of the top targets in college football.

Projected Position: Wide receiver

ISD Grade: 93 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 92.3 (4-star)

What he does best:

Seeing Williams on film and in person at Irish Invasion, he can flat out run. He has the speed to be a vertical threat and run by defenders.

He has shown great potential after the catch with that speed on this particular play, but also isn’t afraid of contact and will run through it to gain extra yards.

What I always love to see from a taller receiver is small guy qualities when it comes to footwork and burst. Williams has that burst out of his breaks to separate from defenders.

He adjusts terrifically to the deep ball and tracks it well. He displays strong hands and has good body control.

What he needs to improve:

He needs to be more consistent with his route running and the details on each rep. This is something Chansi Stuckey was helping him with at Invasion and Wiliams was actively seeking out ways to be better.

What’s his ceiling?

I think he can play multiple spots for the Irish, but I see him as a top option on the boundary. The player he reminds me of is former Notre Dame receiver Kevin Austin, which may give some fans pause, but everyone who saw the peak of what Austin could do should know what I’m referring to.

The ability to play big, get deep, and still have the ability to do damage after the catch is rare. At his best, that was the player Austin was for the Irish.

Other factors didn’t allow for him to be that player for a longer period of time. As long as there is nothing like that holding back Williams, that’s the kind of impact I could see him having.
