It was certainly an eventful trip to the Midwest earlier this month and one that included a detour Isiah Canion‍ is glad he made.

The 2024 Georgia receiver added a stop in South Bend during a previously-scheduled trip to another in-state school.

“Actually, I was on the way to Indiana's Junior Day, and somehow or another, the coaches got word of me being in Indiana and Coach Chad Bowden, the recruiting coordinator, and I got in touch,” the Warner Robins High School standout explains.

“He was like, 'Are you in Indiana?' I was like, 'Yessir.' He was like, 'Bro, get up here.' And I was like, 'Yessir.'

“It was great. I loved the campus and all the facilities that I got to see. The coaches were really cool.”

Bowden and Canion had been in touch the week prior to the visit and the 6-foot-4, 190-pounder also connected with receivers coach Chansi Stuckey beforehand.

“It was kind of cool that they hit me up,” says Canion.

And while he was on campus, he learned he had an offer from Notre Dame.

“It was like midway through the visit, I went to Coach Stuckey's office, me and my dad,” he recalls. “We were sitting there watching a presentation on the drills and how he coaches and whatnot. Then halfway through the presentation he was like, 'Yeah, we're going to go ahead and offer you.'

“I was like, 'Whoa!' I was so happy. I really wanted to get up and just dance or something, but I just sat there and I smiled trying to keep my cool.”

Canion already had offers from schools like Indiana, Vanderbilt, UAB, Jackson State, Georgia Tech, Penn and Dartmouth, but the Irish offer certainly made an impression.

“It's Notre Dame, dude,” he says. “Like, that's crazy. It a big deal to me.”

Canion’s offer sheet is a reflection of how seriously he takes his academics.

“I know football has a shelf life,” he says. “Nobody wants to just be done with football and not do something that they like and make good money doing it, so I figured I might as well capitalize on the opportunity given.”

The trips to Indiana and Northwestern were his first of the process, but he’s already looking at multiple return trips to South Bend.

“Go to the spring game maybe and then take an official visit later on down the road,” he says.

“I was thinking about catching the game, so I can see the student body and just how everything is once the season really gets rolling.”

He’s also considering trips to Georgia Tech and UAB, but interest has been picking up quickly.

“There's still a bunch of coaches reaching out, so I'll have to get my calendar lined up.”
