2024 Ainsworth (Neb.) tight end Carter Nelson‍ made his long-awaited return to South Bend for his official visit to Notre Dame over the weekend.

The Nebraska native isn’t one to get caught up in the weather, but Nelson and his family experienced much nicer conditions for 48 hours compared to the last time they were on campus for the Boston Colleg game in November.

That said, the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder immediately noticed how Notre Dame’s culture from the second he stepped foot on campus as this visit was much more in-depth than his first trip.

“The difference was meeting new people and seeing the way they do things,” Nelson told ISD.

Notre Dame doesn’t hide from the academic demand it puts on student-athletes and it’s why Nelson is intrigued with the university.

“They are one of the few schools that can offer an amazing education while still having a very high competing football program,” stated Nelson.

Nelson might have met more people on this visit, but the heart of his meetings centered around time with head coach Marcus Freeman and offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Gerad Parker.

“The talks with Parker and Freeman were great,” said Nelson. “They just talked about what they saw me doing and how we could make history together.”

Another highlight for Nelson was getting to spend time with Notre Dame’s other commits and top prospects. Quarterback CJ Carr‍ and receiver Cam Williams‍ made their way back to South Bend to chop it up with Nelson, while also showing him how he fit into the 2024 class.

“I honestly grew very good bonds with the other kids,” explained Nelson. “They are an amazing group and we had a really good time together.”

After officials to Georgia and Notre Dame, Nelson’s next step will be to finish his June visits as he’s expected at Penn State and Nebraska. From there, the four-star prospect will go into decision mode as he plans to make a commitment next month.

“I’m going finish my visits and then hopefully make a decision early July,” said Nelson.
