Notre Dame’s recruiting strategy has changed a touch in recent weeks, and more offers are going out to find players to play in the Rover spot in Mike Elko’s defense.

Bossier City (La.) athlete Israel Mukuamu is a guy that fits into what the Irish are looking for at Rover. The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder is a big and athletic body, but also as elite length to play off the edge.

“They like my film a lot, Mukuamu told Irish Sports Daily. “Coach (Clark) Lea said he liked my film. They want to see if I can get on campus or come to camp this summer.”

Rover is not a position that is entirely foreign to the Louisiana native as he plays a similar role for Parkway High School.

“I basically play Rover now,” explained Mukuamu. “I would have to come down to play the slot. It was kind of like a nickel and linebacker role, so I am used to it already.”

The three-star prospect holds offers from the likes of Indiana, Oklahoma State, Purdue, SMU, South Carolina, and Wake Forest. Mukuamu was in the Midwest recently, but didn’t get a chance to stop by Notre Dame.

“I was actually up there when I went to visit Indiana and Purdue,” he stated. “I didn’t know Notre Dame was that close by.

“I would love to see what Notre Dame is about. It’s a good program, and I know it’s a good school. If they are serious about me, I will make the trip up there.”

Mukuamu was impressed with what he saw in the Midwest and is set to visit some schools in the South this weekend.

“It was pretty good,” Mukuamu said of his trip to the Midwest. “Indiana was a good visit and so was Purdue. I enjoyed my time in the Midwest.

“I have visited Mississippi State, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Oklahoma State. I plan on visiting LA Tech on Friday and SMU on Saturday. I will hopefully be visiting Southern Miss and LSU in the next week.”

On his visits, Mukuamu is looking to see what life is like as a student-athlete. He is seeking to find out who and where he would be spending most of his time, but also paying close attention to the coaching staff.

“I am trying to see the schools and the facilities,” said Mukuamu, who wants to major in Sports Med. “I want to see where I would be for the next four years. I am interested in the people. I will be with them in the program, and I want to see how the coaches coach too.”

Elko and Lea have brought a more positive approach to coaching and Mukuamu is open to all styles.

“I am a good player, and I don’t have attitude problems,” he said. “It doesn’t matter to me if the coach is strict or laid back. I just hope he can make me become a better player and get me to the next level.”

Mukuamu doesn’t have a dream school and is currently working to get faster, stronger, and fine-tune his technique. However, he is also embracing the opportunity to live out his dream.

“I just love watching college football,” said Mukuamu. “I have the chance to play at a Division-I level, and that was my goal. I am just living in the moment.”
