Notre Dame is always looking for a tight end to continue the ‘Tight End U’ legacy and offensive coordinator Chip Long has identified another 2019 target.
Prestonwood Christian (Texas) tight end Austin Stogner picked up an offer from the Irish on Tuesday night after chatting with Long over the last few days.
“I spoke to Coach Long,” Stogner told Irish Sports Daily. “He followed me on Twitter on Friday, so I have been talking with him. He looked at my film, so I called him afterward, and he said he had good news.”
The message from Long was pretty clear to Stogner. The Notre Dame staff wants him in South Bend to see how he’d fit into the tight end-heavy offense.
“He told me they wanted to get me up to Notre Dame,” explained Stogner. “He felt I was a good player that would fit into the offense well.”
The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder knows the nuts and bolts about Notre Dame but is looking forward to finding out more about the program.
“I know they have great football tradition and offer a great education,” stated Stogner.
The Plano native comes from a rich football area, but there are also some good genes in his family. His father played receiver at Baylor, and his cousin played receiver at North Carolina.
“I am constantly surrounding myself with good people, who have the same goals I have,” Stogner said. “There is great competition all around me. I don’t have to go far to find competition.”
The four-star prospect already holds offers from Baylor, Colorado, Duke, Florida State, Houston, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Tennessee and Texas A&M, but Stogner says he isn’t getting too overwhelmed.
“It’s going fast. It’s not very hectic right now, but I am sure it will be,” he stated. “I am still trying to figure out what I want in a college.
Ideally, Stogner says he intends to find a school that runs some pro-style and spread offensive looks, which is right now Long’s ally. Stogner believes he can offer a school the complete package in the run and pass game.
“They can spread me out wide, and I catch balls,” stated Stogner. “I can run with the best of them too. I can stick my hand in the dirt and block. I can run across the middle and catch balls too.”
Stogner will head off to Lincoln this weekend for a look at Nebraska before shutting stepping away from recruiting for a few months.
“I am going to Nebraska this week, and then I am going to shut it down until the summer,” said Stogner. “I’m not sure about my summer schedule yet.”
