Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh is virtually always going to be a stop for Notre Dame on the recruiting trail…well, that is as long as a storm doesn’t knock out power and cancel school.

That’s what happened the day Irish offensive line coach Joe Rudolph was scheduled to drop in on the Pennsylvania powerhouse last week. As always, Central Catholic has multiple prospects Notre Dame has interest in, including 2027 offensive lineman James Halter‍.

Halter was disappointed about school being cancelled the day Rudolph was supposed to come, but reached out to him by phone to connect anyway.

“He was just looking forward to the summer,” Halter said of Rudolph. “I'm going to be heading up there for a camp at the beginning of June and we just talked.”

As a sophomore, there are still regulations prohibiting the methods of communication between Halter and the Irish.

“Since I'm younger, there's a lot of contact rules where I can reach out to them, but they can't reach out to me,” said Halter. “So far it's been a super positive relationship, though. I really like the coaches there.”

Halter has early offers from Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Boston College, NC State and Michigan State.

“I'm still very new to the whole process and how everything runs, but it's going pretty great,” he said.

After playing tight end, albeit an almost exclusive blocking tight end position, last season, Halter is in the midst of transitioning to offensive line full time.

“It's gone really smoothly,” he said. “My coach has really been helping me out. The same with my teammates. They've just made it very good. They're doing a great job of coaching me and helping me out.”

His father, Jordan, played offensive line for the Irish from 1989-93, and he has been to South Bend a few times.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder said following in his father’s footsteps would be “pretty awesome.”

“It is something that would definitely be a possibility for me,” he said. “Growing up, we'd watch a lot of games from them, so being able to play there would be special.

“We've only been out a couple. We've been for more lacrosse games than football games, but we've been to three football games. The most recent one we went to was the Playoff game versus Indiana. It was awesome.”

Halter returned last month to see a spring practice and the Blue-Gold Game.

“It was super great,” he said. “I got to meet all the coaches for the first time. I really just got to experience how they run their team.”

Halter is looking forward to returning to South Bend for camp this summer.

“Just to look at how they coach there and what they look for in their players,” he said.

His summer schedule isn’t set just yet, but could also include a stop at Ohio State.

It’s early, but he has an idea of what he’s looking for in a college.

“I really look for a very strong degree, great team culture and a team that doesn't mind developing players so they can reach their fullest potential.”
