There’s hot streaks and then there is what Notre Dame is doing right now with recruiting. They are absolutely rolling right now on the trail and picked up another elite tight end with a commitment from Ian Premer.
An elite athlete who is outstanding on the basketball court (24.4 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 3.8 apg, and 2.1 spg as a junior), the baseball diamond, and the football field, Premer is as talented as any tight end prospect Notre Dame the Irish have landed in recent years. This is a massive addition to the class for the Irish.
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 220
Projected Position: Tight end
ISD Grade: 96 (4-star)
National Average Grade: 94.5 (4-star)
What he does best:
Premer is a rare athlete at his size. He has a ton of juice after the catch.
There’s a lot of tight ends who are also basketball players, but I don’t see many who attack the rim like Premer does. He’s explosive.
He has good ball skills and displays good body control when adjusting to the football.
When he touches the football, the two words I would use to describe him are relentless and dynamic. Those aren’t often associated with the tight end position, but they fit with Premer.
What he needs to improve:
Similar to Notre Dame’s other tight end commit Preston Fryzel, Premer will have to learn to play in-line at times. That will be an adjustment he has to make. But just like Fryzel, he shows some edge while blocking. I think he’ll end up being more than adequate as a blocker.
He’s a dominant athlete, but will have to become more refined as a route runner. He has all the traits to be great in that department.
What’s his ceiling?
I think he shares a lot of similar athletic traits to current Notre Dame tight end Eli Raridon, but more of a Gronkish nature after the catch that is reminiscent of former Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer. He doesn’t have the refinement as a receiver that Mayer had, but it can certainly be developed.
That combination of those two players matches up with a player Notre Dame faced last season in the College Football Playoff. Former Penn State tight end Tyler Warren was a straight up “dude” who stood out against elite competition because of his athleticism and compete level. Premer has the talent and approach to make the same kind of impact.
He has a chance to develop into an All-American at Notre Dame and will be in the ISD Fab 50.
