Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chip Long is on the hunt for a 2019 quarterback, and his latest stop was in Texas to offer St. Pius X gunslinger Grant Gunnell.
The 6-foot-5, 203-pounder was aware Notre Dame would be at Wednesday’s practice, but he didn’t feel any pressure with Long present.
“I have great teammates, and they make it easy,” Gunnell told Irish Sports Daily. “I have some unreal receivers."
“I was excited to get the offer. Coach Long, the offensive coordinator, was at practice to saw me throw and after that, I got the offer. He couldn’t talk to me, but it was cool to have him there.”
The Irish are a program Gunnell is well-aware of, and it’s an offer he will take very seriously moving forward.
“I know of Notre Dame’s rich history and everyone always talks about Notre Dame across the nation,” he stated. “It’s not just a regional school.”
Gunnell already has upwards of 30 offers before his junior season, and the four-star prospect was on the road a lot this spring.
“I went to Arkansas, Florida State, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M,” explained Gunnell. “It was a pretty busy spring. I don’t have any summer visits planned at the moment.”
With offers from the top programs in the country, Gunnell isn’t wasting time on his visits, as he already has a good idea of what he is looking for on each visit.
“I am always looking at how the team is competing not just in their conference, but also for National Championships,” said Gunnell. “I want a school always to be competing.
“I am also looking at the staff and the ability to prepare me for the next level if I blessed enough to have a shot at the NFL. I am also looking at the academics and a place that feels like home with the coaching staff and people around the school.”
The Houston native admits he is far from a finished product and that has fueled his offseason workouts.
“I am a little raw,” stated Gunnell. “My sophomore year was really my second year of playing quarterback and throwing the ball. I have been really working on my mechanics and footwork. There is always stuff to work on. I am working on getting the ball out faster, my footwork, and getting the ball to my receivers on time.
“One thing I have that you can’t teach is the fact I hate losing.”
While it might be a while before he makes a decision, Gunnell will take a close look at offensive scheme, but playing in a pro-style or spread system doesn’t matter too much to him.
“It’s not going to be a big factor for me,” said Gunnell. “There are quarterbacks in the NFL that have come from both systems. I know typically you want to go to a pro-style, but that’s not always the case anymore.”
Note: Notre Dame has also offered Gunnell's teammate, 2018 receiver Bryson Jackson.
