Prentiss Hubb had a lot of options, but in the end, it was the opportunity – or more accurately, the opportunities – that led the 2018 Washington, D.C. point guard to announcing his verbal commitment to Notre Dame on Wednesday.

“I think it was a lot of things,” Hubb’s head coach at Gonzaga College High School, Stephen Turner, told Irish Sports Daily.

“One, it’s Notre Dame. He had four great schools, he couldn’t have made a bad choice regardless of who he picked in his final four.”

Prior to his final decision, Hubb had narrowed a lengthy list of scholarship offers to the Irish, Maryland, Villanova and Virginia.

“I think Notre Dame, for him, offered a lot of similar feelings to what it’s like at Gonzaga,” Turner continued. “I think the impression Coach (Mike) Brey made on him and the vision he painted for him was big. Having the opportunity to play in one of the best conferences in the country in the ACC.

“Having an opportunity to potentially come in and play right away; he’s going to have to earn his way, but the window is open where he’ll have an opportunity to earn that early. Then, most importantly, being able to go to a place where he’s going to get a great education.”

The picture Brey painted was one of opportunity for the 6-foot-3, 185-pounder with current point guard Matt Farrell set to depart the program just before Hubb arrives.

“Opportunity to get on the floor early,” Turner explained. “Opportunity to earn his keep early. Opportunity to play against some of the best and continue to grow as a player. Opportunity to get developed by a great coaching staff.”

Hubb helped lead Gonzaga to a D.C. State Championship last season and the Irish are hoping for similar leadership qualities.

“His grit, his toughness, his ability to be a communicator with his teammates, his ability to make guys around him better,” Turner said of Hubb’s top traits. “He’s very versatile. He’s a point guard who has the ability to score when he needs to, but he does a great job making other guys better. I think he rebounds it really well for a point guard, which is something people don’t talk about a lot with point guards.

“His ability to defend and get his hands on a lot of balls; I liken him to Johnny Dawkins, a guy who would do a lot of good things. Prentiss is very similar in that aspect.”

Turner said Hubb is excited to have the recruiting process behind him.

“I think the weight of the world is off his shoulders. He can relax and enjoy himself the rest of the summer and all season. Now it’s something he doesn’t have to deal with. He can concentrate on his last year and become a better player, so he can be ready when he gets there.”
