Landon Wolny’s planned trip to Notre Dame later this month will have to wait.
The 2027 Florida tight end had been set to attend the Irish’s March 21 Junior Day, but that visit is being postponed after a change in his family’s schedule.
“I'm actually working right now to get that rescheduled,” he told Irish Sports Daily.
Wolny remains interested in making the trip to South Bend later this spring.
Notre Dame has not yet extended an offer, but Wolny currently holds offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Florida State, Kentucky, Michigan State, Mississippi State, NC State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Utah and Washington State among others.
Notre Dame’s atmosphere and recruiting approach have been among the factors drawing Wolny’s attention.
“I think it's a mix of their culture, the guys they bring in,” Wolny told Irish Sports Daily. “They’re not standard dudes. They're dudes that are looked at intensively, well thought of. When you bring those guys together, it creates a culture like no other.”
The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder has been building a relationship with assistant tight ends coach Harris Bivin throughout the process.
“He's a great coach, great mentor,” Wolny said. “A guy you could really connect with on a personal level. I think that's one big thing that I'm looking for in this recruiting process.”
Bivin seems to believe the Fort Myers High School standout’s abilities would translate well in the Irish offense.
“He just said my playing style, getting open, creating space and making plays,” Wolny said. “He said he gets tight ends in positions where they allow them to move freely and kind of create separation on their own.”
When Wolny does make his way to campus, he plans to focus on how the program operates and whether he can envision himself fitting within it.
“It would be my first time going up there, so kind of first time of everything,” Wolny said. “Just seeing everything and going back to the culture. I think there's a lot of tradition in Notre Dame.”
The Naples-area prospect is also planning several additional trips this spring.
“I'll be going up to Yale, Virginia, (Florida), and then looking to go to Texas,” he said.
Yale stands out for a different reason than many programs involved in his recruitment.
“I think a degree is overlooked nowadays,” Wolny said. “I think that it's something that you can never buy. So it's something that is special to me.”
The Irish often pitch being able to offer the best of both worlds when it comes to football and academics. .
“That was Coach Bivin's second sentence when he came and saw me,” Wolny laughed. “It's not something they take lightly.”
Wolny is approaching the recruiting process deliberately as he works through his spring visits and prepares for the next stage of the process. And recruiting isn’t the only thing on his mind.
“I'm not in a position to commit really fast. Just letting God kind of guide me and getting ready for spring ball and ultimately win a state championship in the fall.”
