Aidan O'Neil‍ will arrive in South Bend this weekend looking to answer a simple question, how does Notre Dame actually operate day to day?

The 2027 New Jersey defensive end is still in the evaluation process, but his recruitment may not stretch as long as some of his peers’ and this visit represents a critical first look at Notre Dame after picking up an offer from the Irish last month.

O’Neil has built early impressions through conversations with Charlie Partridge and Marcus Freeman, but this will be his first opportunity to see everything in person.

“I’m just really excited to see the practice and see how the coaches coach,” O’Neil said. “I’ve met Coach Partridge in person before, but not Coach Freeman, nor have I met the defensive coordinator yet. So I’m really excited to see Notre Dame because it’s Notre Dame.”

The Ramsey, N.J. native has approached this recruitment with a clear mindset. He is not walking into the visit with preconceived notions and, despite coming in with high expectations, he wants to evaluate the program from the ground up.

“I don’t know much about Notre Dame,” he said. “I’m hoping that I learn a lot.”

That evaluation starts with on-field fit and learning how the Irish would use him within their defense.

“I want to see exactly how I fit into the scheme and what their plans are for me,” O’Neil said. “I want to see how that compares to the other schools and how they want to use me.”

The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder has the frame to play inside and the athleticism to stay on the edge, which he seems to prefer.

The visit will also give him a chance to evaluate the structure of the program beyond the field, including meetings, facilities and how the staff interacts with players.

“I want to see how meetings are,” he said. “I want to see how Coach Partridge handles things and I want to see Coach Freeman’s leadership in person.”

In addition to Notre Dame, O’Neil holds offers from Penn State, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana and Illinois among others. He has already visited Kentucky this spring and will also travel to Texas A&M, Indiana, Illinois and Penn State as part of a busy schedule over the next several weeks.

That stretch will play a major role in shaping the next phase of his recruitment.

“I want to make my decision,” O’Neil said. “Ideally, I would make my decision based off spring practice.”

O’Neil has already locked in official visits to Penn State and Illinois and has secured a Notre Dame official as well, with another remaining spot still to be determined, likely between Tennessee and Texas.

But these spring trips could prove to be more determinative than the officials.

“I’m almost hoping that I can mark some schools off during the spring,” he said.

And, if O’Neil finds the school for him during this swing, he wouldn’t rule out making a decision before official visit season even begins.
