Cam Toomey‍ arrived in South Bend with sincere interest in the Irish, but left with an even better feel for Notre Dame.

The 2028 New York defensive end made his first trip to South Bend shortly after picking up his offer, giving him a full look at the program early in his recruitment.

“It was awesome,” Toomey told Irish Sports Daily. “I loved it here. Getting to talk to all the coaches and see campus and watch practice and all that definitely changed my perspective on this school for sure.”

The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder spent extended time with defensive line coach Charlie Partridge, defensive coordinator Chris Ash and head coach Marcus Freeman throughout the visit, gaining a better understanding of how he fits within the defense and how the program operates.

Toomey also toured the facilities, spent time on campus and got an up-close look at practice.

A key part of the visit centered on how he would be used within the defensive scheme.

“They definitely see me rushing the passer and then also dropping into coverage if I need to,” he said.

The Saratoga Springs product also pointed to the people inside the program as one of the biggest takeaways from the visit.

“They all seemed like really personal people and really down to earth,” he said. “I could see myself playing for them. I don’t feel like just another number there. I actually feel special.”

Notre Dame has quickly positioned itself as a major early player after extending the offer earlier this month.

He also holds offers from Boston College, Cal, Kentucky and Syracuse among others. He is set to visit Ohio State this weekend as he continues working through a full spring schedule.

The visit also resonated with his family, as the overall experience made a strong impression.

Toomey is already looking at a return trip as the next step in the process.

“I think I’m going to try and come back during the summer, maybe again during the spring,” he said.

“I’ve got to talk to my mom about what we’re going to do, but coming back during the summer or spring for something.”

As a 2028 prospect, Toomey is in no rush to make a decision, but this visit clearly moved Notre Dame into a strong early position.
