Trenton Yancey is beginning to narrow his focus and Notre Dame did its part to work its way firmly into the picture this weekend.
The 2027 Texas wide receiver left his first visit to South Bend with the Irish among the schools standing out.
“It was good,” Yancey told TexAgs’ Jason Howell.
“I liked it.”
Yancey enjoyed meetings with head coach Marcus Freeman, receivers coach Mike Brown and general manager Mike Martin.
“I embraced a lot from that visit and I learned a lot,” he said.
Yancey’s trip gave him a chance to see both the football and cultural sides of the program, and one moment in particular left an impression.
“My favorite part was probably when we went to the Grotto, where you light candles and then pray over it,” he said. “We went to that and we went through the church to see how the church was.”
On the field, Notre Dame’s offensive structure stood out, particularly how the staff utilizes its receivers.
“Just how they moved the receivers,” he said, noting receiver Jordan Faison particularly caught his eye during the Irish’s Saturday scrimmage.
“He was moving inside, outside. The motions, they were getting him the ball in a lot of different ways.”
The Duncanville High School standout also noticed how opportunities were distributed across the group.
“Even the other receivers outside of Faison,” Yancey continued. “The freshmen; Kaydon Finley, Devin Fitzgerald were just making plays, getting the ball. That’s something that stands out a lot to me.”
Yancey was struck by how the Irish get the ball to their slot receivers, which translates directly into how he views his own potential role.
“They’re going to make sure that the playmakers get the ball and put the ball in the playmakers’ hands and let them do what they do,” he said.
Beyond football, Notre Dame’s broader identity also resonated.
“Just the prestige of the place,” he said. “The religion piece, the family piece and how outside of football, if you were to attend Notre Dame that you’ll be set with your degree and things outside of football when football is all said and done.”
Yancey is still building out his visit schedule, with an official visit to SMU set for May 1 and additional trips still being finalized.
“I don’t have all my OVs down yet,” he said.
But as he works toward a decision, a group of schools have begun to separate.
“Florida, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Notre Dame,” he said.
And he has a commitment date locked in as well.
“July 5th.”
