Notre Dame offered 2020 Providence Day (N.C.) defensive end, Jacolbe Cowan, last week but the Irish also checked on another defensive player while at the school. 2019 linebacker Ositadinma Ekwonu has been in contact with linebackers coach Clark Lea and could be in South Bend next week.
“Coach Lea stopped by my school,” Ekwonu told Irish Sports Daily. “He had made me aware of the Irish Invasion camp and the academics at Notre Dame when we have talked.
“I just talked to them about Irish Invasion, and I think I can make it up to the camp.”
The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder is still looking for his first offer, but the regional schools are plenty aware of him.
“I have been talking with Duke, North Carolina, and Wake Forest recently,” explained Ekwonu. “I might visit those three schools over the summer. The only school I have visited was South Carolina.”
The Charlotte native had mixed reviews about his trip to South Carolina but could tell there were new vibes coming from the program.
“They have a nice program and everything,” Ekwonu said. “The visit went alright, but there were just some things I didn’t like about it. You could definitely tell there was a new culture and everything down there.”
Despite being so young, Ekwonu does have an idea of what he is looking for in a program and it starts and ends with academics.
“I told Coach Lea academics come before anything and good athletics are just a bonus,” stated Ekwonu. “I know Notre Dame fits that perfectly.
“I am not exactly sure what I want to major in right now. I know I want to be a physician like my father and have my own business.”
Ekwonu believes he has sound fundamentals at his position and is working to become a better athlete heading into his junior season.
“I believe my strengths are running through the tackle and not taking plays off,” stated Ekwonu. “I have been focused on loosening my hips and changing direction during the offseason.”
