Coach: 2020 WA OL Geirean Hatchett Checks All The Boxes
Jamie Plenkovich isn’t surprised by the kind of interest Geirean Hatchett is already generating.
“He’s just a very, very athletic big body, which I think you just don’t see in kids his size,” the Ferndale High School head coach says of the 2020 Washington offensive lineman.
“He runs really well. In our offense, he pulls and gets out in space and gets on his bodies, so when you watch his film, it’s really evident how athletic he is at his size, 6-5, 270.”
Plenkovich still believes Hatchett has room to improve but doesn’t have much doubt he will do just that.
“He’s been a two-year starter for us on the o-line and d-line, so just continuing to mature into his body and get bigger and stronger,” the coach says of where Hatchett could get better. “We’re not a team that throws the ball a ton, so obviously, I’m sure the thing college guys want to see is him improving pass protection-wise. That’s not something we ask him to do a ton of.
“Otherwise, it’s just really continuing to mature. The game is going to slow down for him at our level significantly here over the next couple years I would imagine.”
Hatchett also checks the boxes off the field.
“He’s a very good student,” his coach says. “He’s a 3.8-student. Even as a sophomore, he showed some leadership skills on a team that was very good last year. We were undefeated in the regular season and lost in the quarterfinals.
“As we move forward, he’s going to have to take more of a leadership role and I’ll have no doubt he’ll do that.”
Hatchett has offers from schools like Washington, Oregon, Stanford, USC, Oklahoma, TCU, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&M and Notre Dame among several others.
“He’s gotten offers from really every top-level Power Five team in the country, so he’s definitely got a lot of choices that he’ll have to wade through,” Plenkovich says.
“Certainly, getting offered by Notre Dame is a pretty big deal.”
Plenkovich isn’t sure if Hatchett will get out to South Bend in the coming months.
“I haven’t talked to him about what he plans to do this summer travel-wise,” the coach says. “He’s been able to visit some places already in the winter through the spring, but I’m not sure what his travel plans are for the summer.”
Hatchett isn’t nearing a decision, but could start looking at focusing in on a path to an end in the months to come.
“I doubt he’ll commit before his junior year, but I think as you start this process, I would anticipate that he would narrow things down after his junior year and take his visits early and we’ll see what happens.
“That decision is completely up to him with what he’s comfortable with and when he finds a place where he’s sure that’s where he wants to be and gets a chance to see every school at the top of his list. He’ll make the decision at the right time for him and his family.”
