Notre Dame has landed its third commitment in the 2020 class as Covington Catholic (Ky.) tight end Michael Mayer‍ has committed to the Irish.

Mayer had his eyes opened during a visit for Junior Day in January, but was sold during his return three weeks ago.

“Sleeping on it, thinking about it,” he said of what he's done between then and now to arrive at the decision.

Tight ends coach/offensive coordinator Chip Long played a vital role as well with the Covington Catholic High School standout.

“Me and Coach Long have talked a lot actually," said Mayer. "I got to know him a lot. He’s a really good down to earth dude. That’s what I respect a lot about him. Him being the OC actually helps too.

Mayer joins quarterback Drew Pyne‍ and fellow tight end Kevin Bauman‍ in the class, something he also paid attention to when making his pick.

“Drew Pyne is obviously a great quarterback," he said. "Me and Kevin are going to come in and compete. That’s definitely because that’s something I crave. I love competition. Competition makes us all better. Me and Kevin competing, that will only make us better.”

In addition to competing against each other, the Irish told Mayer they expect to use plenty of multiple-tight end sets as well.

“Kevin is the in-line guy and I’m out wide,” he said.

Mayer is excited to have the process complete and to have found a home.

“It feels awesome. There’s nothing better than the Notre Dame campus and family. They take care of you and I’m really excited about what’s in store for me in the future there.”

Mayer held offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.
