Notre Dame gave Daylan Carnell‍ his choice of games to come to this fall, so the 2021 Indiana athlete picked the one he thought was best.

“After the first one or two games, they sent me mail and then they sent the email and wanted me to pick a home game to come up to,” the 6-foot-2, 185-pound sophomore said.

“I picked the Florida State game. At the beginning of the season, Florida State was ranked high and I thought it was going to be a high-ranked matchup.”

The Seminoles struggled to a 4-4 start in their first season under head coach Willie Taggart, but they’re still talented enough to provide the unbeaten Irish a test when they meet in South Bend on Nov. 10th.

Carnell was in South Bend earlier this summer.

“I went up there for one of the camps they do,” he said. “I feel like I did pretty good. I went to corner when I was up there.

“We didn’t really get to see that much of the campus, but I did talk to Coach Todd Lyght, the DB coach. He said that he really liked me. He said we could fix small things, but he really liked me, my size and my overall athletic ability.”

The Ben Davis High School standout was impressed with Lyght’s coaching style.

“He taught the little things, the details,” Carnell said. “I liked that because that’s what I need to get better at.”

Carnell is listed as an athlete who could play receiver or cornerback.

“If you asked me this at the beginning of the season, I would have definitely said DB no question because I hadn’t really played wide receiver that much,” he said of his preference.

“But they needed me at wide receiver this year. I’ll still give it to DB though because I still play it and that was the first thing I really loved to play.”

Carnell already has offers from Purdue and Cincinnati.

“To me, it’s a blessing,” he said of the early scholarship offers. “The Purdue offer came last year when I was a freshman after College Night. It came out of nowhere. Coach called me down to the office. I was on the phone and he told me he wanted to give me a scholarship. I was shocked.”

The Indianapolis native is also receiving interest from Indiana and Wisconsin, two schools he’s already visited this fall.

“I went up to IU when they played Virginia Tech and I went up to Wisconsin when they played Nebraska,” he said.

Carnell doesn’t have any other trips beyond Notre Dame scheduled at the moment and isn’t completely sure what the biggest factors in his ultimate decision will be.

“My dad brought that up to me recently and said that’s what I need to start thinking about, but I don’t really have all of that down yet.”
