2018 Wayne (Ohio) receiver L’Christian ‘Blue’ Smith has had plans to visit Notre Dame in the past, but things have just not worked out for the four-star receiver. The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder now has plans to visit South Bend on April 22nd for the Spring Game.
“I am looking forward to seeing the facilities and stuff,” stated Smith. “My friend Alex Reigelsperger, who has committed the Kentucky, took a visit and told me I needed to get there. He said it was a great atmosphere and everyone loves Notre Dame football.”
Area recruiter Mike Elston has been on the Ohio native to get to South Bend, and his persistence looks to be paying off.
“Coach Elston and I have had steady contact,” explained Smith. “He wants me to visit. He sends me videos of spring practice and stuff too. He is showing me what they are doing to try and get me to visit.”
Notre Dame, Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, and Wisconsin have offered Smith, but he isn’t giving any hints on a top group…for now.
“It’ll probably be a surprise,” laughed Smith, when asked if a top group was coming. “I will probably post it on Twitter.
“I have to keep it a secret.”
Last week, Smith made headlines when he posted on Twitter that he was upset an Ohio State analyst wrote the Buckeyes might be settled on him being a receiver.
“It was just an article someone had wrote about me,” Smith explained. “It was kind of discouraging for me because I try every day to work on perfecting my craft and getting better as a wide receiver.”
As a junior, Smith recorded 1,300 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns against the top competition in Ohio.
“As a teenager, I have high hopes of playing receivers,” added Smith. “It’s downgrading when someone says I shouldn’t be playing the position when I have been playing it my whole life. I thought I have proved I can play that the next level.”
Notre Dame will get its chance to pitch Smith on a role in a few weeks, but the Buckeyes want him as a deep threat.
“They like going over the top,” stated Smith. “If you have a guy that is 6-foot-5 and fast going over the top, it’s a lot easier. I think that’s what they are looking for.”
The biggest news of the day was Smith stating he was done playing basketball. How good of a basketball player is Smith? Kentucky told him he would be able to be on scholarship with the football team and would be cleared to also play basketball.
“I am probably not going to be playing basketball next year,” Smith said. “I am going to stick with football. All of my skills and stuff came from part-time football and part-time basketball.
“If I am full-time football, who knows what I could do. It’s going to be football from now on.”
The decision to leave his first love wasn’t easy, but Smith knows his size can be a money-maker on the football field.
“It’s tough,” said Smith. “I have to look at the long-term. I don’t want to sit the bench at the next level. There are 6-foot-5 guys on every basketball team, but you don’t see too many 6-foot-5 receivers on football teams.”
