The recruiting train never stops rolling for Notre Dame and they just added a significant addition to their 2027 class. LB Amarri Irvin joins already committed Ellis McGaskin in a linebacker room that is overflowing with talent.
I’m a huge fan of Irvin’s game. He’s been an outstanding player at IMG Academy and has the potential to eventually become a game wrecker for the Irish.
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 195
Projected Position: Linebacker
ISD Grade: 93 (4-star)
National Average Grade: 90.6 (4-star)
What he does best:
Irvin is an all caps LINEBACKER. He loves the physical part of the game and is terrific against the inside run.
His ability to diagnose and play fast on the perimeter is unique for an inside linebacker as well.
He has tremendous instincts. That shows up in coverage as well and he does a terrific job here of breaking off of his responsibility to cover the running back. He comes back to the play with eyes on the quarterback to make the pick.
Irvin knows how to get skinny as a blitzer and shows plus pass rush potential.
Like most great players at the position, he has an edge to his game and I love how violent he plays.
What he needs to improve:
I thought he took a massive jump in his junior season with his block destruction and ability to diagnose plays more quickly. If he keeps on that track, the sky is the limit for him.
I’m not sure how accurate the 195 is. He appears to be bigger than that and he’ll obviously have to be in college, but I don’t imagine he’ll have a difficult time eventually adding the weight.
What’s his ceiling?
Irvin stands out on a team filled with future Power 4 studs. That’s always a good thing and he’s a prospect that separates himself with his production and play on the field.
He’s gotten bigger since his sophomore season and will need to continue to add weight, but he already plays bigger than his size and makes up for it in a lot of other ways as well.
He’s a dynamic athlete and incredibly intelligent football player. I think he has a chance to develop into a special linebacker at Notre Dame and they’ve had a few of those in recent years, but his skill set reminds me a lot of former Georgia LB Roquan Smith.
I believe he could make a similar impact at the college level as Smith, who was one of the best linebackers in the country.
