Coach | New WR Quincy Porter "Exactly" What Notre Dame Was Seeking
Notre Dame needed a true number one wide receiver in the transfer portal.
Bergen Catholic (N.J.) High School head coach Vito Campanile is convinced the Irish got just that with Monday’s addition of Quincy Porter.
“That’s exactly what he is,” Campanile said.
Porter announced his plans to head to Notre Dame after entering the transfer portal from Ohio State earlier this month. It’s a move that immediately addressed the Irish’s most pressing offensive need.
Porter, who played for Campanile during his prep career at Bergen Catholic, will arrive in South Bend with the profile the Irish have been seeking; size, body control, physicality on the boundary and the mindset to handle being the focal point of a passing game.
“It’s a super fit,” Campanile told Irish Sports Daily. “I thought it was a great fit for him out of high school. He’s an unbelievable athlete, a meticulous worker.
“I think he’ll thrive under Marcus Freeman. I thought Notre Dame did a great job recruiting him on the back half of high school, and in today’s world, it’s pretty easy to rekindle those relationships.”
The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder built his reputation at Bergen Catholic as a dominant outside receiver capable of winning contested catches and controlling space along the sideline, traits that translate directly to the role Notre Dame is asking him to fill.
“In my 27 years of coaching, I think he has the best body control and catch radius of any kid I’ve ever been around,” Campanile said. “He absolutely loves football. He’s going to work really hard at it.
“He understands how to deal with adversity and how to work through hard times. He’s going to take a professional approach to everything he does.”
Porter’s path to Notre Dame has not been linear.
After starring for one of the nation’s premier high school programs, he spent the 2025 season at Ohio State before entering the transfer portal. Campanile believes that experience only sharpened Porter’s readiness for what comes next.
“College football is so transient right now,” Campanile said. “I don’t think that’s changing anytime soon. But I think this is a huge shot in the arm for that room. I think he’ll be a big-time player for Notre Dame.”
Porter is expected to anchor the receiver room, command coverage and allow the offense to function with a true boundary presence, something that was missing last season.
“They’re looking for him to be that true number one boundary guy,” Campanile said. “He’ll be able to be that. That’s exactly what he is. I think he’s about as good as there is in the country at that.”
Physically, Porter will arrive ready.
“His body looks tremendous right now,” Campanile said. “He’s working really hard to get up to speed. He’s a full 6-foot-4. He’s a different guy.”
Porter represents both immediate impact and long-term stability at a position that demands it.
