2021 Texas QB Preston Stone Thrilled About Notre Dame Offer
Notre Dame received a commitment from 2020 New Canaan (Conn.) quarterback Drew Pyne last month and wasted little time moving on to 2021. Parish Episcopal (Texas) quarterback Preston Stone added an offer from Notre Dame on Tuesday after quarterbacks coach Tom Rees watched a workout.
“Coach Rees came to practice on Tuesday, and he watched me throw,” Stone told Irish Sports Daily. “I had the chance to talk to him over the phone after practice, and he gave me an offer.”
The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder already holds 23 offers as he finishes his freshman year of high school, but the magnitude of the Notre Dame offer wasn’t lost on Stone.
“Notre Dame has always been a powerhouse,” said Stone. “They’ve always been fun to watch. To get an offer from Notre Dame, especially this early, it really means a lot. I’m very grateful for it.”
Baylor, Boston College, Harvard, Houston, Michigan, Ole Miss, SMU, South Carolina, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M are a few of the programs that have offered the Texas native.
It might be a while before he commits, but Stone is embracing each day as he’s living out his dream.
“It’s been a learning experience for me,” Stone said of the offer. “I’ve been working to put myself in this situation for my whole life. I’m taking it day by day and trying to stay humble.”
Stone also had the benefit of watching his brother, Lindell Stone, go through the process a few years ago. Notre Dame hosted Stone for Irish Invasion before signing with Virginia.
“It was a blessing to be able to see how he handled the process,” explained Stone. “He was in a very similar situation I’m in right now. I got to see how handled the pressure and the spotlight.
“I’m really trying to replicate his values and work ethic.”
As for his summer schedule, Stone hasn’t set any dates, but a trip to South Bend isn’t out of the question.
“I haven’t made plans for any visits this summer,” stated Stone. “I’d be interested in coming up to Notre Dame for a camp or a game.”
The Irish will compete with several schools to get Stone on campus.
“It’s been an everyday thing,” laughed Stone. “It’s been a lot. The schools recruiting me the hardest right are now are Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan and Georgia.”
Stone’s brother attended high school at Woodberry Forest (Va.), and while the Parish Episcopal star doesn’t have plans to move high schools, Stone has no problem leaving Texas if the school is the right fit.
“I don’t have a preference,” Stone said of distance. “It’s going to come down to the best school for me at the end of the day. Proximity to home isn’t going to be a big factor for me.
“It’s going to come down to the best balance of academics and football. I still have a few more years to figure it all out.
“The coaching staffs are going to shift around, and you really don’t know who is going to be where three years from now. I just have to consider all the factors.”
One thing Notre Dame has in its favor is Parish Episcopal head coach Daniel Novakov would love to see Stone end up in South Bend.
“My head coach played quarterback at Notre Dame,” said Stone. “He’s been in my ear and pushing me to go to Notre Dame. That’s just who he is because he loves the school and knows it’s a great program. I know he wants the best for me at the end of the day.”
