Cameron Martinez‍ definitely turned heads as he worked out at receiver at Notre Dame’s Elite Skills Camp on Friday and the Irish even wanted to see what the 2020 Michigan athlete could do on the other side of the ball as well.

“I think I did pretty good,” the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Martinez said. “I felt like I could have done a little bit better, a lot of things I need to work on, I figured that out throughout the camp. I think overall, it went pretty good.

“I talked to pretty much every single of the coaches. After the camp, the safeties coach put me through some drills at the end too. I talked to one of the coaches who recruits my area, Coach (Jeff) Quinn. I thought he was really cool. We talked a lot after the camp as well.”

The Muskegon, Mich., native already has 10 offers from schools like Kentucky, Boston College, Syracuse and Indiana among others.

“It’s really cool just knowing a lot of schools like me and a lot of schools paid attention to me, getting my name out there and seeing a lot of schools interested means a lot,” he said. “It makes me feel like all of the hard work is paying off.”

Some of the offers are for him to play receiver and others quarterback. He doesn’t have a preference of position.

“I just want to touch the field anyway I can,” he said. “Whatever the coach wants me to do, I’m up to the challenge.”

The Irish asked him to stay patient moving forward.

“They pretty much just said it’s going to be a long process,” Martinez said. “They want to get to know my family a little bit more. They want to get me back on with my family and they’ll keep on watching me this season because they know this year will be a big year.”

Receiving that kind of attention “meant a lot” to Martinez.

“I was pretty impressed with the school and I’m from a Catholic school, so just to hear about that and be on campus, I felt really good about it,” he said.

“I know there’s a lot of tradition. I know every coach coaches the same way, they bring a lot of energy. They talk about faith and family. That’s one thing that really stuck about Coach Quinn.”

Martinez was at Muskegon Catholic Central High School before transferring to Muskegon High School.

He said he’ll be back to South Bend with his family “for sure,” possibly again this summer or maybe for a game during the fall.

He has a few other visits in mind for the coming months as well.

“I plan on trying to go up to Louisville and Penn State as well and try to go up to Michigan and Michigan State,” he said.

He has plenty of time before he needs to make a final decision, but does have a good idea of what factors will be most important when he does.

“A lot of it would be how the school is, being a little bit close to home, how it’ll prepare me for after football, what will life be like after and just preparing me for a good future.”
