David Folorunsho’s recruitment included no shortage of Notre Dame perspectives.

In the end, his own was the one that stood out most.

The 2027 Illinois defensive lineman announced his commitment to the Irish on Friday, giving Notre Dame a crucial piece along the defensive front as the Irish construct another elite recruiting class.

He chose the Irish over his other finalists, Miami, Texas Tech, Georgia and Michigan.

“Life after football, the relationship piece with Notre Dame and just close to home,” Folorunsho told ISD of what separated the Irish.

Those factors had been building throughout his recruitment.

“Notre Dame is a little bit more special for me because I have a lot of people around me that went to Notre Dame,” he said. “It’s close to home and it’s just a great spot for me and my family.”

That familiarity runs deep.

Folorunsho trains with former Notre Dame defensive lineman Kerry Neal, plays for former Irish standout Tom Zbikowski at St. Patrick’s High School. The school is led by former Notre Dame offensive lineman Dan Santucci, creating a strong connection to the program throughout his development.

But while those ties helped shape his first impressions of Notre Dame, it was what he experienced firsthand that ultimately mattered most.

“I feel like every time I go back down, I learn something new,” he said.

“Last time I went down, finding out how everybody treats each other like family would probably be the main thing and how tight-knit everybody is and just the community aspect.”

That environment and familiarity resonated with both Folorunsho and his family and helped solidify the decision.

“It helped a lot because that's something very important for me and my family,” he said. “We really like what Notre Dame has to offer.”

On the field, Notre Dame is getting a player who embraces the work that comes with development.

“Somebody that never quits, the grittiest player on the field and just a team player overall,” Folorunsho said of what Irish fans should expect him to be.

He gives Notre Dame 17 verbal commitments in the Class of 2027 and seven on the defensive side of the ball. He joins defensive end Aidan O'Neil‍ on the defensive line.

The Irish remain top contenders for other elite defensive linemen, including defensive tackle Brayden Parks‍ and ends Jackson Vaughn‍, Abraham Sesay‍ and Marcus Fakatou‍ among others.

Folorunsho is ready to embrace a new role as he transitions from recruit to recruiter.

“Hell yeah,” he said when asked if he plans to try getting others to follow him to South Bend.

Folorunsho already has a clear plan for how he wants to approach that responsibility.

“I know a lot of top guys in my class and just in general in my class, in the ‘28 class,” he said. “If I'm able to persuade them in any way possible, I'm going to do it.”

With his decision now made, the focus shifts back to development.

“I’m blessed. I can’t complain. I’m just ready to get back to work.”
